Maracuya passion fruit

Every year, we bring you news in our organically produced citrus fruits. In this case, we have been cultivating the Passionflower or Passiflora edulis plant, whose citrus production is the Ecological Passion Fruit in our Sagunto fields since 2017, and due to its peculiarity and its rapid adaptation to the environment, in 2018 we collected a small harvest and this year in 2019 we will be able to enjoy 100% of its fruit at its full point of maturity.

The Passionflower or Passiflora edulis, in addition to its fruit, at certain times of the year offers us a flower with a very characteristic appearance, similar to a crown of thorns, which was what led the Spanish colonizers to name it as it is also known as "El Fruit of the Passion ”; its pentarradial structure received a theological interpretation, with the five petals and five sepals symbolizing the ten apostles (twelve, less Judas Iscariot and Peter), while the five stamens would represent the five stigmata. Finally, the three pistils would correspond to the nails of the cross.

What is really the Ecological Passion Fruit?
The Ecological Passion Fruit is the fruit of the Passiflora edulis, it is like a kind of ball (the size of a fronton ball) but with an oval, fibrous and juicy shape, covered with a thick, waxy, delicate and inedible peel. Its pulp contains numerous small seeds of a color between yellow, reddish and orange, with a viscous texture.

How is the Ecological Passion Fruit consumed?
You have to cut it and consume the seeds and the meat directly from the fruit, or also in salads, sauces, juices, salads, smoothies ... The skin is not edible.
It should be consumed only when the fruit is ripe. The skin (shell) should not show external damage, and when it is wrinkled on the outside it will be at its optimum point of consumption.
It can be eaten directly from the fruit, once opened, used in fruit salads; or salads with green leaves, where its slightly acid flavor offers a surprising combination.
Fruit juice — obtained by pressing the pulp or processing it — is often too thick to drink directly; the usual is to combine it with other fruit juices, yogurt, milk or simply water.
